What Are the Motor Oil Options for My Automobile?

Twin City Automotive would be happy to discuss the different motor oil options on the market. The option that is best for your automobile depends on what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends. For example, if you drive an Audi or BMW, the manufacturer will recommend synthetic motor oil only. If this is what your owner’s manual says, then stick with synthetic all the time. If the owner’s manual says conventional, you can use this motor oil or opt for a different type depending on several circumstances.

Conventional

In existence for over a century, conventional motor oil is the motor oil that we have known for decades. It is extracted from crude in the ground and is used in most of the automobiles in the United States. Conventional motor oil is changed every 3,000 miles to retain its viscosity. It is the most affordable oil on the market and does an excellent job of protecting standard engines provided it is changed when it needs it.

High-Mileage

As its name suggests, high-mileage motor oil is designed for engines that have turned over 75,000 miles. As the engine gets older, it is more susceptible to oil leaks and requires greater protection and cleaning. As such, high-mileage oil is designed with additives that help keep the engine clean and prevent it from developing an oil leak. You never want an oil leak in the engine, as this can damage the engine beyond repair if left unattended.

Synthetic

As we mentioned above, both Audi and BMW recommend synthetic oil for their engines. The reason why is that these engines are high-performance, so they tend to run a little tighter and a little hotter. They need the extra protection synthetic oil provides while they are in operation. This doesn’t mean that your standard engine cannot benefit from synthetic oil. It can, especially if you live in an area with an extreme climate.

Blend

Finally, if you’re an “in the middle” kind of person, you may opt to put a synthetic blend in the engine. This motor oil is a combination of both synthetic and conventional motor oils. As such, it will protect the engine better than straight conventional oil does but not cost as much as synthetic oil does. This oil can be beneficial in many engines.
