If it is, call our shop right away.
Power Loss/Performance Problems
Naturally, your automobile is going to have problems producing power and maintaining its performance if it is not getting enough fuel. Unfortunately, you will notice that this is particularly an issue when your engine is operating under stress or when you are trying to drive at high speeds. The reason why the engine is losing power and having performance issues is that is not receiving enough fuel from the fuel pump. If the engine receives too much fuel, it will surge.
Reduction in the Fuel Efficiency
Either of these engine conditions is going to cause a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. With gas prices what they are these days, no one can afford to go to the service station more often than necessary. Unfortunately, in order to restore your engine’s efficiency, you must restore the fuel pump. In other words, the bad pump must be replaced.
Reduction in the Fuel Pressure
A reduction in the fuel pressure is the primary cause of the problems discussed above. Your engine needs a certain amount of fuel pressure in it in order to perform correctly. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, you can test the fuel pressure to see if it is low. If it is, you need a new pump.
Overheating Problems
A strange side effect of a malfunctioning pump is that your engine may start to overheat while you are driving your automobile. In this case, the pump motor is overheating and transferring that heat to the engine. This can happen if it doesn’t have enough fuel to cool it off.
Difficulty Starting the Vehicle
Finally, it’s completely understandable that a malfunctioning pump can make it difficult to get your automobile started. In fact, you may be unable to start the vehicle at all. If you hear whining noises in the tank, this is definitely a sign that the fuel pump is going bad.
