Don't replace what doesn't need replacing.

A driver came in last fall with a quote from a chain shop for a $4,800 transmission rebuild on his Ford F-150. We pulled it in, ran the actual diagnostic, and found the real problem — a failing speed sensor and overdue fluid. Total cost: under $400. Same truck, same symptoms, dramatically different bill. That's why a real diagnostic before any major transmission work is non-negotiable at our shop.

Twin City Automotive provides transmission repair Winston-Salem drivers can trust before they commit to expensive work. We service automatic and manual transmissions for cars, trucks, SUVs, and most European vehicles — including transmission flushes, fluid services, sensor replacement, valve body work, and full rebuilds when actually warranted. All right at our Hanes Mall area shop.

If your transmission is slipping, shifting hard, leaking fluid, or throwing codes, bring it in. We'll diagnose what's actually wrong before recommending any work — and we'll never quote a rebuild for a sensor problem.

What We Handle

Complete Transmission Services in Winston-Salem

From a routine fluid service to a full rebuild, our shop has the diagnostic equipment, the platform-specific knowledge, and the parts pipeline to do transmission work the right way.

— 01

Transmission Service Winston-Salem NC

Routine transmission service — fluid and filter changes at manufacturer interval, transmission flushes when needed, pan inspection for metal debris, and condition assessment. The single best way to extend transmission life and avoid expensive repairs.

— 02

Transmission Repair Winston-Salem NC

Hard shifts, slipping, hesitation, harsh engagement, transmission codes, or check engine light? We diagnose the real cause first — sensor, solenoid, valve body, fluid level, electrical, or internal — and repair only what's actually needed.

— 03

Transmission Fluid Flush & Filter

Old transmission fluid is one of the most common causes of premature transmission failure. We perform full transmission flushes, fluid and filter services, and pan drops with proper inspection — using the correct fluid spec for each vehicle.

— 04

Transmission Diagnostics

Before any major work, we run a full transmission diagnostic — code scan from the TCM, fluid condition check, pressure tests, sensor verification, and a road test. We don't recommend rebuilds based on guesses.

— 05

Transmission Rebuilds & Replacement

When a rebuild or replacement really is the right answer, we do it properly — quality components, correct torque specs, fresh fluid and filter, post-repair test cycle. We also handle remanufactured transmission installations when that's the better option for your vehicle.

— 06

European & CVT Transmission Service

ZF (BMW, Audi, Jaguar), DSG (VW/Audi), Mercedes 7G/9G, and CVT transmissions all need specific fluids, specific procedures, and specific diagnostic tools. We have the factory-grade software for European platforms and the experience for CVT service the dealer often gets wrong.

Trouble Signs

Signs your transmission needs attention

Transmissions tell you when something is wrong — usually long before they actually fail. Catch these early and the repair is often cheap. Wait too long and a small problem becomes a rebuild.

— I.

Slipping or hesitation between gears

Engine revs but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally? That's slipping — usually low fluid, dirty fluid, a worn solenoid, or a failing clutch pack. All easier to fix early than late.

— II.

Hard or jerky shifts

Used to shift smooth, now it bangs into gear? Could be valve body, fluid level, or a failing sensor. Often fixable without rebuild — but only if diagnosed properly.

— III.

Delayed engagement when shifting park to drive

Put it in drive, count one Mississippi, then it engages? That's a delayed engagement — usually fluid pressure, internal leak, or worn components. Get it diagnosed before it gets worse.

— IV.

Burnt smell or red fluid leaks

Burnt smell means overheated fluid — and overheated fluid kills transmissions fast. Red fluid leaks mean you're losing fluid somewhere. Both warrant immediate attention.

— V.

Check engine light or transmission warning light

Modern transmissions have their own dedicated warning lights and codes. If anything trans-related is lit, get it scanned with a real diagnostic tool — not the freebie at the parts store.

— VI.

Grinding, whining, or unusual noises in gear

Manual transmissions: usually clutch or synchros. Automatics: usually torque converter or pump. Either way, the noise is a warning before failure.

FAQ

Transmission repair, answered

The questions Winston-Salem drivers ask us most when their transmission starts acting up — or another shop quotes them a giant rebuild bill.

— 01

How much does transmission repair cost?

It depends entirely on the actual problem. A fluid service and filter is on the low end. Sensor or solenoid replacement is mid-range. A full rebuild or replacement is the most expensive — typically several thousand dollars. We always run a real diagnostic first and give you a written estimate before any major work begins.

— 02

How often should I service my transmission?

Most automatic transmissions need a fluid service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles depending on vehicle and driving conditions. Manual transmissions often go longer. European platforms have specific service intervals — we follow each manufacturer's spec. Check your owner's manual or call us with your year/make/model.

— 03

Should I get a transmission flush?

Yes if you're at the right interval and the fluid is in usable condition. No if the fluid is already badly contaminated — flushing very old fluid can sometimes dislodge debris and cause problems. We inspect the fluid first and recommend the right approach for your specific transmission.

— 04

How do I know if I need a rebuild or just a repair?

Most transmission complaints turn out to be sensors, solenoids, valve bodies, or fluid issues — not internal failure. A real diagnostic (which we do free with any major transmission work quote) tells the difference. We never recommend a rebuild without first confirming internal damage.

— 05

How long does a transmission repair take?

A fluid service is usually 1 to 2 hours. Sensor or solenoid replacement is half a day. A valve body or torque converter is one full day. A full rebuild or replacement is typically 2 to 5 days depending on parts availability and vehicle.

— 06

Is it safe to drive with a slipping transmission?

For short distances, sometimes — but every mile you drive on a slipping transmission causes more wear and damage. If you're slipping consistently, especially under load, get it diagnosed this week. Severe slipping can leave you stranded.

— 07

Do you work on European and CVT transmissions?

Yes. ZF transmissions (BMW, Audi, Jaguar), DSG (VW/Audi), Mercedes 7G/9G, and CVT transmissions all need specific fluids and procedures. We have the factory-grade software for European platforms and CVT-specific service knowledge. We use the right fluid spec for each vehicle — generic ATF doesn't cut it on these.
