Squealing, grinding, soft pedal? Don't wait.

A few weeks back a Toyota 4Runner pulled into the shop with a metal-on-metal grinding sound every time the driver hit the brakes. The pads had worn completely through and were chewing into the rotors. Caught a week earlier, it would have been a $200 pad replacement. By the time he got to us, it was rotors and pads — much more expensive than it had to be. That's the lesson with brakes: the early warning is cheap, the late call is not.

Twin City Automotive provides brake repair Winston-Salem drivers trust with their families' safety. We service brake pads, rotors, calipers, brake fluid, master cylinders, and ABS systems for cars, trucks, SUVs, and most European vehicles — right here at our Hanes Mall area shop. Every brake job starts with a real inspection so we can tell you exactly what needs to be replaced and what doesn't.

If you hear a squeal, feel a vibration, smell something hot after stopping, or your pedal feels different than it used to — bring it in. We'll inspect the whole system and give you a clear, honest estimate before any work begins.

What We Handle

Complete Brake Services in Winston-Salem

From a yearly brake inspection to a full caliper rebuild, our shop has the tools, the training, and the OEM-grade parts to keep your brakes working the way they should.

— 01

Brake Service Winston-Salem NC

We recommend a full brake service at least once a year, or at every fourth oil change. We inspect every inch of the braking system, replace worn pads before they damage the rotors, and tell you straight whether anything else needs work.

— 02

Brake Repair Winston-Salem NC

Squealing, grinding, vibration, soft pedal, or pulling to one side — all classic signs your brakes need attention. We diagnose the actual cause and repair it properly. No "just replace everything" upsell.

— 03

Brake Pad Replacement

Brake pads are designed to wear so the rotors don't have to. Replace them at the right time and you save money. Wait too long and you're replacing pads, rotors, and possibly calipers all at once. We use OEM-grade pads matched to your vehicle.

— 04

Brake Rotor Resurfacing & Replacement

If your brakes vibrate when you stop, the rotors are usually warped or worn unevenly. We resurface rotors when they're still within spec, and replace them when they're not. Resurfacing is cheaper, but only safe up to a certain thickness.

— 05

Brake Caliper Service & Replacement

A stuck caliper causes uneven pad wear, pulling, or that hot smell after a short drive. We rebuild or replace seized calipers, replace caliper hardware, and bleed the system properly so braking force is even on both sides.

— 06

Brake Fluid Flush & Master Cylinder

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can lead to a soft pedal or full failure under hard braking. We recommend a brake fluid flush every two to three years, plus master cylinder service if your pedal feels off.

Trouble Signs

Signs your brakes need attention

Brakes give you plenty of warning before they fail completely. If any of these match what you're hearing or feeling, schedule a brake check this week.

— I.

Squealing or screeching when braking

Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator that intentionally squeals when the pad gets thin. It's the cheapest warning you'll ever get — don't ignore it.

— II.

Grinding or metal-on-metal noise

The squeal stage is over. The pads are gone and the metal backing plate is now grinding into the rotor. Stop driving on it — every mile makes the repair more expensive.

— III.

Soft or spongy brake pedal

A pedal that sinks or feels mushy usually means air or moisture in the brake lines, a leaking master cylinder, or worn brake hoses. All of those are safety-critical.

— IV.

Vibration or pulsing through the pedal

Warped rotors are the usual culprit. The pulsing comes from uneven rotor surface meeting the pads. Resurfacing or replacement fixes it.

— V.

Hot smell or smoke after braking

A stuck caliper is dragging your brake pad against the rotor even when you're not braking. It overheats fast and can cause real damage if you keep driving.

— VI.

Pulling to one side when stopping

One side is braking harder than the other — usually a stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or a brake hose problem. Get it checked before it becomes a control issue.

FAQ

Brake repair, answered

The questions Winston-Salem drivers ask us most when their brakes start making noise, feeling weak, or just don't seem right anymore.

— 01

How much does brake repair cost?

It depends on what's actually worn. A pad replacement on one axle is the most common and the most affordable. Pads plus rotors costs more. Pads, rotors, and a caliper rebuild is the higher end. We always inspect first and give you a written estimate before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

— 02

How long do brake pads last?

Most brake pads last between 30,000 and 70,000 miles depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and how much stop-and-go traffic you drive in. City driving wears pads faster than highway. We recommend a brake inspection at every fourth oil change to catch wear early.

— 03

Can I just replace the brake pads, or do I need rotors too?

If the rotors are still within thickness spec and aren't warped, scored, or rusted badly, you can usually just replace the pads. If the rotors are too thin, warped, or grooved, they need to be resurfaced or replaced. We measure rotor thickness before recommending either.

— 04

Is it safe to keep driving with squealing brakes?

The squeal is your warning that the pads are getting thin. It's not an emergency — but it means you have weeks, not months, before you start damaging the rotors and the repair gets much more expensive. Schedule a brake check soon.

— 05

How long does a brake job take?

Pad-only replacement on one axle is usually 1 to 2 hours. Pads plus rotors is 2 to 3 hours. Caliper service or full system work can be a full day. We'll give you a realistic timeline when you book.

— 06

Should I have my brake fluid flushed?

Yes — every two to three years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause a soft pedal or even brake fade under hard stops. A flush is cheap insurance against expensive problems.

— 07

Do you work on brakes for European cars like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes?

Yes. Our techs are factory-trained on European vehicles and we use the right parts for each. BMW and Mercedes brake systems often need specific OEM-spec components — we know the difference and source accordingly.
