It’s the great American vacation: the road trip! Before you pack up the car and set the GPS, make sure your car is ready for the trip. Here’s a handy checklist that will help you avoid car trouble when you’re on your next vacation.
- Take a look at your tires. Are they inflated properly? Your car manual will tell you the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Proper inflation helps with handling and fuel efficiency. While you’re at it, examine your tire treads. Do they look run down? Is there uneven wear? If so, best to get them checked out by a mechanic to make sure replacements aren’t needed.
- Be ready for rain. Are your wiper blades firmly anchored in place? Are they doing a good job of cleaning the windscreen? Pop in replacements if they look worn. Nothing’s worse than a floppy wiper when a sudden storm blows up.
- Top off the windshield wiper fluid. It’s a cheap fix that can avoid a world of trouble.
- Square away the spare. Make sure it’s inflated and ready to go in case you need it. Don’t forget the tools necessary to change the tire, like a lug wrench and jack.
- Review your paperwork. Is the car manual in the glove box in case you have a question? Is your car registration up to date? Scan the insurance card to make sure it’s current – some insurance companies send updated cards several times a year. If you belong to an auto club or other organization that provides roadside help, be sure you have your membership card and other information necessary should you need to contact them.
- Focus on how your brakes feel. Are they smooth or clunky? Do you hear any sounds when you step on the brakes? Be alert for a grinding feel, strange squeaks, or shaking vibrations when you push down the pedal. These can be signs that brake parts are worn, so best to have your local garage ensure all’s well.
- Look under the hood to look for any loose or damaged hoses and other connections. Next, see if your battery connections are good and clear of any corrosion. If you’re a member of Triple A, you can get a free battery test to make sure you’re juiced up and ready to go.
- Check the car’s oil and add more if necessary. Consider a quick oil change in the days before you go.
Odds are your car trip will go off without a hitch. Help make that happen with a little prior planning.
